Tenikwa Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre accepts any injured, abandoned or displaced wild bird or animal from along the Garden Route. We nurse it back to health, and then return it to the wild.  On principal, we do not charge anything to the person who brings the animal to us, because we do not want this ever to become a deciding factor in whether the animal gets a second chance.

You can appreciate that the process of rehabilitation can cost a lot of money.  A baby caracal may stay up to seven months in rehabilitation before it is able to fend for itself in the wild.  Penguins arrive at Tenikwa, sick and exhausted.  They undergo an intensive stabilization process which can last up to 10 days before they are transferred to a specialist marine rehabilitation centre to undergo further rehabilitation and release anywhere from 3 weeks to 4 months after acceptance into the centre.  In South Africa, there is very little government support or grants for this kind of work.  Most centres work on donations from the public.

At Tenikwa, you can help us by giving a small monthly donation which will go towards the costs of rehabilitation. We will keep you updated on an on-going basis about the animals who arrive at the rehabilitation centre. You will be privy to our plans for releasing the animal, photographs of the rehabilitation process.   In this way, you help us financially to have a sustainable rehabilitation centre, but you also contribute directly to conservation by being involved in animal rehabilitation. Details will be displayed in the Awareness Centre which is open to the public.
